ABOUT LGBTQ+ THERAPY

Joie de Vivre is an affirmative practice and celebrates the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer experience. Our practice embraces a positive view of LGBTQ+ identities and relationships and focuses on how LGTBQ-identified individuals can cultivate a sense of wellbeing and a personal identity that allows them to flourish in all areas of life.

Utilizing Affirmative Therapy we work with clients to addresses the negative influences that homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism have on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and offer a climate of warm support and encouragement.

    • Work with a therapist who understands the broad needs of all people as well as the unique needs of people with LGBTQ identities.

    • An environment in which clients feel respected in the uniqueness of their sexual orientation and gender identities.

    • Empowers and allows clients to identify their own treatment needs.

    • Uses inclusive, positive language.

    • Understands that gender is multidimensional, not binary.

    • Recognizes sources of sexual, gender, and body privilege.

    • Provides clients with the space and reassurance to create their own journeys.

  • Joie de Vivre is a practice that accepts and helps people of various sexualities. Therapy can provide a positive view of asexuality and takes into consideration the effects discrimination places upon asexual people often due to a lack of societal and mainstream knowledge.

    Common Asexual Identities

Demisexual: Demisexuals are people on the asexuality spectrum who only experience sexual attraction in the context of a strong relationship with another person. For demisexuals, attraction only occurs in the context of a close intimate relationship.

Gray asexuality: Sometimes called gray-ace, gray asexuality has a fluid definition that means different things to different people. Graysexual individuals often feel sexual attraction infrequently or have less of a desire to engage in sexual activity.

The difference between demisexuality and gray sexuality is people who are graysexual don't need an emotional bond to feel sexual attraction like demisexuals.

  • For the cisgender neurotypical individual, spirituality and religiosity are generally associated with positive mental health outcomes but for people within the LGBTQ+ community, there is a higher correlation mental health issues and internalized homophobia due to anti-LQBTQ+ discrimination and prejudice.
